September is School Attendance Awareness Month

I’d like to take a moment to highlight School Attendance Awareness Month, which takes place each September. At GVA North, we strongly believe in the importance of regular student attendance.

Research shows that students who are chronically absent, missing 10% or more of the school year (18 days or more), are less likely to:

  • Read proficiently by third grade
  • Succeed in middle school
  • Graduate from high school

In fact, by 6th grade, chronic absences become the leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school in the future. This is why, except in cases of illness or emergency, we ask that GVA North students come to school every day.

Punctuality also plays an important role in student success. At GVA North, supervision begins at 7:35 AM, doors open at 7:45 AM, and the bell rings at 8:00 AM. Students arriving after 8:05 AM are marked tardy. Students missing even 10 minutes of school consistently grow less academically than their peers who arrive at school on time. Please try to have students here on time and present daily so we can help them excel!

We work hard to make GVA North a place where everyone feels supported and can learn. If your family is struggling with attendance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to one of our Assistant Principals, so they can help with resources or support.
