What is the Seal of Biliteracy?
The Seal of Biliteracy is an award a school, school district, or state gives to recognize students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. Our vision is to help students recognize the value of their academic success and see the tangible benefits of being bilingual.
The Jr. Seal of Biliteracy Award is the first step in preparing students for the 8th-grade Seal of Biliteracy.
Previously, this was an optional program for students in which they completed all aspects independently. For the first time this year, it is a required project for all 5th graders that teachers will support in school. We will still need parent participation on some level, but most of the work will be done with teacher guidance.
Below are the requirements to earn the Jr. Seal of Biliteracy:
Reading iReady Scores:
- “Early on grade level” or higher
Immersion Language Scores:
- Intermediate Low or higher.
Language Projects
- A written essay in English on the importance of bilingualism.
- An oral presentation in your immersion language on a topic of the student’s choice
Community Service/Culture Events
- Ten hours of documented community service or participating in cultural events.
- The majority of this can be completed during school hours/events.
Students who cannot achieve the above iReady and/or STAMP scores may complete tasks #3 and #4 to earn the Jr. Seal of Biliteracy Pathway Award.
All 5th-grade students will receive an informational packet that details the process and timelines.
