Response, Innovation, and Student Equity Fund The RISE Education Fund supports high-needs school districts, charter schools, and public institutions of higher education to address the learning challenges related to the economic, social, and health impacts of COVID-19 in a manner that creates sustainable innovations that improve student learning, close equity gaps, and enhance operational efficiency for pre-K-12 through higher education.

throughout the pandemic we found that all of our schools were struggling with keeping their students engaged the only heard about the rice funding we thought this is a perfect opportunity to try to make that work we just did not reach every members who we hadn't said is anyone interested in working on students we had 14 reply which exit we thought we may only have five so 14 was amazing and they're really spread out across the state and high school model which made it even better for a lot of our engagement data really was living in this attendance world actually when we looked at a tendency to we're like oh they're engaged or they're not engaged and that wasn't really giving a picture of what engagement was like inside the classroom we are looking at three different engagement areas so emotional engagement behavioral engagement a carnival for the rise project I think is exemplary in that effort to just focus on engagement support students what they need in their learning environment to see an academic benefit of course but to support them across the domains of Engagement as well we started to realize we didn't have a way of evaluating engagement we didn't have a way of truly addressing engagement challenges and so we got a group of teachers together to talk about what this can look like we decided on specific intervention strategies that use the first ones increasing cognitive list the second one is Universal Design for Learning and then the third one is cooperative learning which was designed to get two more involved in their learning and have them be the drivers of their learning for the purposes of this grant we have some pretty specific guidelines on the different Warner groups were looking at in talented are students with IEPs or special education needs 504 students who may qualify for free and reduced lunch or for students who kick-off meeting today we are going to go through and have her one share what their actual intervention strategy is Eggleston I am the student services coordinator at global what Academy in Northglenn Colorado we are a language immersion school our school is a 50-50 model of English and then either Spanish Mandarin Chinese or Russian so students to have their day in English and half the day in Emerson language of choice last spring when we have the observations the initial kind of walk through what we noticed in our classrooms where the teachers doing the Geordie of the talking so our students look engaged they look compliant but in reality they're sort of sitting in the teacher is talking at them for most of the class. So we want to flip that so our overarching goal is by Mae teachers will create and Implement effective lessons that will increase the cognitive lift are students in the classroom so ideally we're going to incorporate academic language intellectual Prep students questioning in our lesson plans by the end of the school year and and teachers will have a good understanding of what is my whole lesson plan I'll look like with all these components mixed into it and then given to me was our end goal or our destination is the student engagement in the classroom or vehicle to get there is the lesson plans this is our driving Target how going to get to our destination within the vehicle are these strategies this academic language the intellectual practice that's within our vehicle that's driving us to our end destination it's going very slowly we're taking baby steps so what we're kind of starting with is V with all the Baseline stuff right now so doing the surveys doing a Baseline. Nations and starting to just introduce the thought in the concept of teachers how can you do this differently and how can you make sure that the kids are doing the majority of the network but each teacher will move at their own pace right so the expectation will be that teachers are pushing themselves but within reason I would say the biggest challenge so far has been the surveying piece particularly with the little so we had to do a lot of revamping on the survey you know initially it was just your run-of-the-mill survey that you would given adults and that doesn't work for a six-year-old so we had to take a step back and change it put it into kid-friendly language add pictures and icons and actually sit down with the kids and explain what the question is asking them I think the teachers are excited I think the teachers are excited I know that the staff that are working on this and particular are excited and everybody's just ready to jump it I think so that's that's a success we're also decided with a charge of federal money under the rise grant program that allowed us to fund innovative ideas across Colorado school leaders who helped us along this process has been participating in a meeting Wade one of the things we've heard loud and clear from everyone is siphons go a long way with incentivizing and buying and things like that so we really love seeing that that funding is going straight to our teachers pockets and helping them feel motivated and excited about the work and obviously we know it's not all about the money but it is a huge benefit for this word especially when were asking people to potentially do more work more time so I feel we really kind of just hit our stride and which is a little scary that it's March but it's also super exciting because we can see a future that as we kind of got started to their project and we were realizing we weren't seeing these immediate results within the first month of school why not you know we had to rethink it we really kind of changed our approach it in the initial you know filming that we did we had this whole idea of lesson planning and that's her feeding our vehicle to drive this project in all these different components we are go Aventura lesson planning and you know my personality is to like have this great project and implemented and we're going to see results within a month and it's just too big and so slowing down and really thinking about the process and what is our outcome or what do we want to see really helped me see the clarity and I think help teachers get on board and as we progressed through the end of last year and into this year the engagement strategy and cognitive engagement has really come to light and what we want to do we have no doubt that we want to can you just moving forward if you don't answer the foreseeable future not just next year or not to end anytime soon I'm definitely curious through I noticed though your classroom but you guys are laying on the ground and we hear all the time that you can't be serious you're like looking at the board and noticing the things gets up can you wear PJs participating engage between how many are in Kids versus what rate the engagement United mean and walking out of a classroom and and one teacher or 1st grade class sitting here realizing they don't have the same understanding of what she engaged in looks like from then till now being able to walk out of a class and every single one of the individuals that were observing with me we were all on the same page even our ratings were all the same dad has been Monumental because we've seen enormous change in mindset and Norman's change and what we're looking for and I think that's going to have plastic in packs
