Community Service and Cultural Events Guidelines
To receive credit for Community Service and Participation in cultural events:
- The activity provides the student opportunities to use the immersion language in the community or experience the culture related to the immersion language.
- Student participation is voluntary.
Community Service includes but is not limited to:
- Volunteering in a target language classroom
- Volunteering for a school tour by using their target language
- Volunteering somewhere and using their immersion language
- Using their target language, order food, or buy products
Examples of participation in Cultural Events
- Perform at International Days or Culture Events in or outside of school
- Rehearsal time will be granted in a 1-to-1 ratio.
- For example, a student who performs for one hour at an event will earn two hours of credit (one hour for performance and one for rehearsal).
- For participation in Culture Events outside of school
- There are many cultural events in the Denver Metro that qualify.
- The school newsletter periodically posts local events.
For questions about whether an activity qualifies for credit:
- Please contact the Biliteracy Award Coordinator at your school.
Documenting Hours Served
- The student must record the service hours and report them to their Biliteracy Award Coordinator.
- The maximum credit for service performed in one day is 6 hours.
